Review All Sixteen Season Finales

Quick comments:

Some Enchanted Evening: Very iff, one of the worst of the first season. Leaves a bland taste in my mouth. D

Blood Feud: Slightly underrated. It's one of the funnier episodes of the season, and features a lot of good character moments. The ending with the ancient statue (spelling?) is golden. A

Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes: Not as good as its prequel, but it's good to see Herb again, and that the saga was concluded. Kind of wacky, but is one of the funniest of the season, and it works well. B+

Krusty Gets Kanceled: More gag oriented, but they're funny, as are the guest stars. A-

Secrets of A Successful Marriage: A very fine Marge and Homer relationship episode. Rather underrated, feels more like it should belong in season 4 or 6. B

Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One: The Mr. Burns we all know and love. They do a good job building the suspense. A

Summer of 4'2: My favorite episode. A

The Secret War of Lisa Simpson: Too disjointed to be interesting. Everything past "Testing" is one huge blur. C+

Natural Born Kissers: Not at all a retelling of "Grampa Vs. Sexual Inadequacy. Told in a new, fresh and funny way. One of the best of the season. A-

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: A bit overrated, but it's still funny, but better than its decendants

Behind the Laughter: A very funny mock of the show, but it's slightly overrated and has alot of meta-references. B/B-

Simpsons Tall Tales: Just a second rate telling of "Simpsons Bible Stories." Overall, bland and that hobo scares me. D

Poppa's Got A Brand New Badge: Much better than "Homer the Vigilante."
Features some good music too. B+

Moe Baby Blues: Proof that the minor characters are still funny and can be developed, even when they're in every god damn episode. A

Fraudcast News: A good plot, and it features some good characterizations, but it has a lot of lame jokes, but the media monopoly makes Burns even more like Charles Foster Kane. B

The Father, The Son, and The Holy Guest Star: A good sister episode to She Of Little Faith. Father Sean's a good one-timer, and the jabs at the Catholics were good-natured. The ending with the war over Bart's message was representative of the show. A-

Your turn.

Some Enchanted Evening: C

Kinda spotty and feels less like The Simpsons than the other S1 episodes (yes, I'm aware it was delayed). A few good laughs here and there, but nothing special.

Blood Feud: A

Very funny episode and ending in particular. This is pure classic material, with an engaging story and lots of fun gags.

Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes: B+

Good all-around, though not really great in any one area. Loved the drinking bird, though!

Krusty Gets Kanceled: A-

Lots of loud, star-packed wackiness, but the good kind. This is like a great version of something from Season 12.

Secrets of A Successful Marriage: B+/A-

A well-done episode that doesn't quite have the emotional impact that it goes for.

Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One: A+

Loved it! My favorite characterization of Burns, tons of great gags, atmosphere unlike any other episode, and an extremely well-told story to boot. One of only six episodes I give an A+ to.

Summer of 4'2: A

This is a really great episode that gives the Simpsons a lot of focus.

The Secret War of Lisa Simpson: B+

Kind of underrated, I think. A nice little episode that shows Bart and Lisa's relationship well.

Natural Born Kissers: B+

Silly, risque episode that's very funny, though little more than an excuse to have Homer and Marge nude for an entire act. Well-done, anyway, and more tasteful than I expected.

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: Haven't seen all of it, but what I have seen would be about a B.

Behind the Laughter: The fanbase is split on this one. I personally liked it. B+

Simpsons Tall Tales: A little dull from time to time, though I find it a bit underrated. The third act is probably the best. B-

Poppa's Got A Brand New Badge: Agreed, it is better than Vigilante. B+/A-

Moe Baby Blues: A

Rough 1st act, but the genius writing and direction of the latter two make up for it. Great stuff!

Fraudcast News: B/B+

Good story but a very weird first act. Overall a good episode with a few weak points.

The Father, The Son, and The Holy Guest Star: B-

A little too rough on Catholics, and Marge's characterization is way off. There're some good gags here though.

Well, here's what I think (out of five stars). I tried to make it more interesting by using graphics, but the board only allows a maximum of 10 images per post.

Some Enchanted Evening: Iffy, but fun to watch for some genuinely good moments and the historical aspect. I really enjoy certain scenes but as a whole its rather dull standalone. Not representative of season one IMO. C/C+

Blood Feud: Really clever and hilarious story. A-

Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes: Pretty good, but a little underwhelming compared to its predeccessor, and most of its season. B

Krusty Gets Kancelled: Again, not really well representative of its season. Its pretty funny, but the story just isn't strong at all. The humor makes it enjoyable. B/B+

Secrets of a Successful Marriage: Another oddity, since this accomplishes what season five rarely could: a great emotional story. Really funny throughout and the ending is really moving. A/A+

Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One: Really great, feels almost cinematic at moments and its hysterical. A lot better then Part Two (which itself was still pretty good). A/A+

Summer of 4 ft 2: One of my absolute favorites, and one of the episodes that really hooked me on The Simpsons. Lisa's plight is relatable in a way that few episodes accomplish. A+

Secret War of Lisa Simpson: Could've been better. Kinda sappy without the real emotional strength of episodes like "Summer". Pretty funny though. B

Natural Born Kissers: Effective and funny look at a couple trying to add excitement back to their marriage. Its also done tastefully and insightfully, something later "racy" episodes and jokes haven't always accomplished. B+

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: Haven't seen it in some time. Despite all the vacation cliches its pretty funny, and certainly way ahead of much of its season. B

Behind the Laughter: Probably the best episode of its season, though in a way that's a bit sad. Used to really love this, but it wears on repeat viewings. B

Simpsons Tall Tales: Not going to assign a grade. To be honest its just been too long since I've seen it and I don't remember much about it, which can't be a good sign. I'll just say it wasn't exactly anything special, and that these non-THOH "trilogy" episodes really should stop.

Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge: Eh, never saw the hype. Its too much of a copy of "Homer the Vigilante" and IMO nowhere near as funny. The last few minutes are great but everything else is extremely uneven, and it doesn't really go anywhere. C+

Moe Baby Blues: The shining beacon of seasons 9+. A basically perfect and classic episode in its own right. A+

Fraudcast News: Some good satire but the humor is rather uneven at times and the story could have been stronger. Still good though. B/B+

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Guest Star: Funny and entertaining, though (as usual) lacking in the insight of old-school religion-based episodes like "Bart Sells His Soul" and "Homer the Vigilante". Basically just a fun episode with a good ending. B/B+

Some Enchanted Evening: B-
I honestly think this was better than the majority of season 1's episodes. Felt disjointed at several places, but hey, nobody had any idea what the hell they were doing back then.

Blood Feud: A
As I've stated before, I truly believe this is the most underrated episode of the entire series. The gag with Homer writing the letter is simply hilarious, as well as him trying to soak the mailbox and impersonating Burns.

Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes: B
While this episode tied up some loose ends about Herb and gave him a happy ending, the episode as a whole felt a bit weak for its time. The whole baby translator thing didn't go very far, even if it was the focus of the episode. Homer's sperm sample was definitely the highlight.

Krusty Gets Kancelled: B+
It is my true belief that Krusty's musical scores are the best musical moments in the series, simply because they're so doggone awful, you can't help but crack up at them (see Radio Bart). The huge guest star montage wasn't handled nearly as well as in "Homer at the Bat", however.

Secrets of a Successful Marriage: B-
Probably the worst episode of its season. Despite some good jokes, it simply felt like a retread of episodes like Homer's Night Out and Some Enchanted Evening.

Who Shot Mr. Burns (Part One): A-
Great set-up, despite Part 2 being slightly better. It also includes my favorite swear moment in the series:
Homer: "Burns sent me this card! To Marge, Lisa, Maggie, and Bart."
Lisa: "Dad, your name isn't on there."
Homer: ".............Kids, can you leave the room for a moment?"
*Bart and Lisa leave*
Homer: "Ffffff..."
*church bells blare*
*birds fly out of nest*
Ned: "Good Lord! That was the loudest profanity I've ever heard!"

Summer of 4 Ft. 2: B
I actually found this episode a bit on the boring side. That being said, there was nothing I really hated, either. Loved the Kwik-E-Mart clone.

The Secret War of Lisa Simpson: B
This episode had one fantastic plotline, though was severely lacking in any humor whatsoever. I didn't think it was too sappy, though.

Natural Born Kissers: C-
I'm sorry, but I found the entire premise behind this episode stupid and too lowbrow for the Simpsons' standards. The only part I really found that funny was Homer and Marge stealing Gil's balloon, who screams that he's been living in there.

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: B
Slightly overrated, though it beats the Africa and Brazil episodes by a mile.

Behind the Laughter: C+
Original, yet poorly-executed. The interviews were funny and clever, though the overall history they created felt really slapped together.

Simpsons Tall Tales: NOT SEEN

Papa's Got a Brand New Badge: A-
One of the only two episodes in Season 13 that didn't want to make me yank my hair out (the other was I am Furious Yellow). Seriously, this felt like one of the classics.

Moe Baby Blues: NOT SEEN

Fraudcast News: C+
Like "The Secret War of Lisa Simpson", this episode had a strong plot, yet was lacking in humor. Some of the scenes were also really unnecessary like Burns drinking the mole's milk (ICK) and Skinner's flashback that served zero purpose whatsoever.

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Guest Star: A-
Besides "Homer the Heretic", this was by far the best shot at religion the Simpsons has ever taken. I'm actually glad it was held over until the finale.

Some Enchanted Evening: B (very underrated)
Three Men and a Comic Book (this is the actual S2 finale, BTW): A (very strong and never fails)
Bart's Friend Falls In Love (again, actual S3 finale): A (I fail to see how this makes some peoples' worst episode lists)
Krusty Gets Kancelled: A- (shows that an episode crammed with guest-stars can sometimes work)
Secrets Of A Successful Marriage: A (True quality classic, what more to say?)
Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One: A (very well plotted mystery)
Summer of 4 ft. 2: A- (only thing that brings it down is Bart's behaviour somewhere in the third act)
The Secret War Of Lisa Simpson: A+ (fantastic in every way)
Natural Born Kissers: B+ (very good, but sometimes spotty)
Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: C+ (very random and rambling)
Behind The Laughter: C+ (horribly overrated)
Simpsons Tall Tales: C (good jokes, but can't hold up)
Poppa's Got A Brand New Badge: A (very good and well done, what more to say)
Moe Baby Blues: A+ (modern classic)
Fraudcast News: A- (keeps up the tradition of good Jean season finales, only spotty once or twice)
Father, Son & Holy Guest: A+ (as with Fraudcast, only remove the last five words)

Some Enchanted Evening: I think this is one of the better episodes of the first season B-
Blood Feud: This is around the point where the show begins to go into the classic era B
Bart's Friend Falls in Love: This is the first full episode of the simpsons that I remember seeing, I laughed my ass of at it when I was 8 and this episode still makes me laugh today. The episode is definately in my top 50 list A+
Krusty gets Cancelled: Nowadays, episodes with tons of guest stars usually suck(I.e Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass), however this episode sets it self apart from the other episodes with tons of guest stars because each guest star in this episode has either a meaningfull apperance or at the very least a good line A
Secrets of Succesful Marriage: Not the best episode out of season five but it still is a good one A-
Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One: This episode had a good Mystery plot and the whole episode was well written: A-/B+
Summer of 4ft 2: This one is a kind of forgettable episode, but still it has some funny parts in it. B
The Secret War of Lisa Simpson: To me this finale marks the end of the classic era. What can I say it's an excellent episode. A
Natural Born Kissers: Some of the jokes are kind of lame but overall its a decent episode B-
Thirty Minutes over Tokyo: Once again it had some good jokes but overall the episode just didn't live up to the other previous 9 season finales. C+
Behind the Laughter: One of Season 11s only really good episodes A-
Simpsons Tall Tales: Crappiest season finale ever! C-
Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge: I was actually suprised at well written this episode was, since most of season 13 was terrible and filled with truly forgettable episodes. B+
Moe Baby Blues: Horribly overrated C-
Fraudcast News: Once again another Horribly overrated and forgettable episode in an otherwise better than average season. C
Father Son and the Holy Guest Star: It was a really great episode, and a good way to end season 16. One of the few recent episodes that have made it into my top 25. A+

Some Enchanted Evening: weak quite unitresting stuff still quite enjoyable as it's not as if there's much inherently bad anput it. C

Blood Feud: Really very very funny by any seasons standard, even though the plot's a little sitcomish it works in the subtle meta-satire of it all A/A+

Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes: Very funny all over but it's a very much a "just a bunch of stuff that happens" episode, although it has a little more heart than other episodes like this A-/A

Krusty Gets Kancelled: Kind of weak for season 4, gimmicky premise make's for a weak story and the humour's a little below average for season 4 B+

Secrets of a Successful Marriage: I think somehow the emotion in this isn't so successful the conflict is developed very late in the story and even though there's sufficient development, but much of it isn't really an emotional story it's a homer get's a new job. But it is hilariously funny and the emotion is still effective. A/A+

What he said.

Summer of 4 ft 2: It's been discussed before why this episode isn't quite A+ material, mainly because of Lisa's wan't to fit in doesn't quite seem like her but it is very good nonetheless. A

Secret War of Lisa Simpson: It's is a little sappy and Hokey but it's still effective to me, I think they really developed a good sense that Lisa was absloutley crushed and devestated, and I think it's belivable that Bart cheering her on would give her strengh to go, atheletes and sport's team would say cheering fans does give them extra encouragment in difficult times, and it's very sweet because Bart is risking a lot by doing it. But it's is a bit too syrupy and lacking a little in laughs, but it's still very funny like just about every episode from 2-8. B+

Natural Born Kissers: Really is quite an anamoly for season 9. I think the fact that there's quite a wack story with Homer and Marge naked going on meant that Scully was satisfied and Matt Selman and maybe other staff members were able to slip in some really brilliant and cute character humour between Homer and Marge. The B story is fun too, if a little pointless. A-

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo: Carrying on the unwelcome tradition of vacation episodes, is still quite a bit funny than subsquent one's mainly due to the 1st act but still not very good. C+/B-

Behind the Laughter: Very good parody of Behind the Music (well duh) showing an orginality and wit not present in most of the season A-

Simpsons Tall Tales: Just very forgettable really not a bad idea but it could be a lot better, I actually think it's a little funnier than most of season 12 C+

Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge: I really don't remember thia episode very well but I think it was quite good. B

Moe Baby Blues: Really just a brilliant emotional, tightly written, involving story with brilliant character humour and development of Moe, that really just came out of nowhere. Still the best season 9+ episode. A

Fraudcast News: Fairly good satire but it was nothing very fresh or sharp, humour wise it was decent too but it could have been so much more. but it does take more flack than it deserves for it's bad jokes B/B+

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Guest Star: not yet seen

All 16 season finales, from best to worst, for me.

1. 9F19 (Krusty Gets Kancelled), Season 4 - 5/5, A
2. 2F16 (Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part 1), Season 6 - 4/5, A
3. DABF17 (Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge), Season 13 - 4/5, A
4. CABF17 (Simpsons Tall Tales), Season 12 - 4/5, A-
5. EABF17 (Moe Baby Blues), Season 14 - 4/5, A-
6. 1F20 (Secrets of a Successful Marriage), Season 5 - 4/5, A-
7. 4F21 (The Secret War of Lisa Simpson), Season 8 - 4/5, B+
8. BABF19 (Behind the Laughter), Season 11 - 3/5, B
9. AABF20 (30 Minutes Over Tokyo), Season 10 - 3/5, B
10. 8F23 (Brother, Can You Spare 2 Dimes?), Season 3 - 3/5, B
11. 7F22 (Blood Feud), Season 2 - 3/5, B
12. 3F22 (Summer of 4'2"), Season 7 - 3/5, B-
13. FABF18 (Fraudcast News), Season 15 - 3/5, B-
14. GABF09 (The Father, Son, & Holy Guest Star), Season 16 - 3/5, B-
15. 7G01 (Some Enchanted Evening), Season 1 - 3/5, C+
16. 5F18 (Natural Born Kissers/Margie May I Sleep with Danger?), Season 9 - 2/5, C

I a) realized I liked season finales more than I thought I did and b) noticed that a lot of what most people think are good episodes are near the bottom of my list.

EDIT: If 7F21, 8F22, and DABF16 (the real season finales) are used instead of 7F22, 8F23, and DABF17, here are my rankings:

1. 7F21 (5/5, A+)
2. 9F19
3. 2F16
4. CABF17
5. EABF17
6. 8F22 (4/5, A-)
7. 1F20
8. 4F21
9. BABF19
10. DABF16 (3/5, B)
11. AABF20
12. 3F22
13. FABF18
14. GABF09
15. 7G01
16. 5F18

Bart: "Please don't call our parents!"

Eddie: "Is it hyphenated?"
Chief: "It used to be, back in the good old days, you know. Of course, every generation hyphenates the way it wants to. Then there's *NSYNC! What the hell is that? Jump in any time there, Eddie, these are good topics."

The episode was incredibly boring. I didn't laugh once. It was WAY too high on morals. I watch the show to be entertained, not to be taught something.

So you completley misunderstod the episode, it was mocking the sitcom convention of a moral at the end of the story and yet your complaining about the episode being too high on morals. I'm sorry but the irony is too much. That really is the most fucking stupid thing I've ever seen here.

posting in this thread has also made me realise the very uninteresting fact of how low season 16's finale production code is...09, compared to 22 from earlier seasons (granted, i know it was due to the pope's death, but it'd still be as low as 16)

Some Enchanted Evening: 3/5 (Very underrated episode. Not the best of Season 1, but by no means the worst. The animation is notably bad, but I find it a very funny episode.)
Blood Feud: 4/5 (Full of great lines from all characters. "Me and my big...letter-writing pen!")
Brother, Can you Spare Two Dimes: 5/5 (Probably the best 'sequel' episode in the show's history.)
Krusty Gets Kancelled: 5/5
Secrets of a Successful Marriage: 5/5 (best finale)
Who Shot Mr. Burns: 5/5
Summer of 4ft 2: 5/5
The Secret War of Lisa Simpson: 4/5
Natural Born Kissers: 4/5
Thirty Minutes over Tokyo: 4/5
Behind the Laughter: 5/5
Simpsons Tall Tales: 2/5
Papa's Got a Brand New Badge: 5/5
Moe Baby Blues: 3/5
Fraudcast News: 4/5 (Another excellent Season 15 episode. Funny and with the right amount of emotion as to make the episode believable and not bore the viewer.)
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Guest Star: 3/5 (Saved from total mediocrity by the great ending. Otherwise a fairly bland and dull episode though.)

Some Enchanted Evening - C (Alrite, cool ending though)

Blood Feud - A + (Classic, the letter homer devised is pure genius)

Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes? - A + (Flawless and quite sentimental)

Krusty Gets Kancelled - A + (Another brilliant episode and i loved Gabbo)

Secrets of a Successful Marriage - A - (I thought it was great, but it kind of detirated abit towards the end)

Who Shot Mr. Burns? - Part One - A (Nice episode, made us intrested about Part Two)

Summer of 4 Ft. 2 - A (Brilliant episode due to the fact that it made us feel sorry for Lisa)

The Secret War of Lisa Simpson - A (Under-rated episode, harshly treated by some people)

Natural Born Kissers - A (Fantastic episode)

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo - A (Very, very funny best Simpsons abroad episode going)

Behind the Laughter - A (A true classic)

Simpsons Tall Tales - D (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge - A (Very funny, loved the ending)

Moe Baby Blues - B (Good enough though slightly over-rated)

Fraudcast News - A (Gets better each time i watch it)

Not yet seen Season 16's finale.

Do I care if that was the whole point of the episode? No, even if I knew that already, it wouldn't changed my opinion of the episode at all. The whole thing was terribly boring.

They usually end on a good note. The last four years have been pretty good.
We seem to be on the same wave level my friend!

A mixed bag really, I've never found Krusty gets Kancelled worthy of all the praise it gets and I have a strong dislike for The Secret War of Lisa Simpson.
